What is Botox?
The injection of botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, has become very popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. The effects usually last three to four months, but the injections can be done quickly, require no recovery time, and are not as complicated as many other cosmetic procedures for the face.
Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When a small amount of Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. The effect is that it temporarily weakens or paralyzes the facial muscles and smooth's or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a few months.
Getting a Botox injection takes just a few minutes after the consultation is finished.
What is Xeomin?
Xeomin®️ is unique. It was the first clinically proven anti-wrinkle injection uniquely purified to remove proteins unnecessary for treatment. Xeomin®️ is a Botulinum Toxin Type A that blocks transmission of acetylcholine (ACh) from neuron to muscle. This inhibits muscle contraction and causes muscle paresis (weakness) or paralysis.
What is DAXXIFY®?
DAXXIFY® is a long-lasting, FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator used to temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like other neuromodulators, DAXXIFY works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for creating dynamic wrinkles and expression lines.
What makes DAXXIFY different is its unique peptide-powered formulation. It is the first and only currently marketed neuromodulator formulated with a proprietary peptide stabilizer and does not contain human serum albumin.
Why Choose DAXXIFY®?
DAXXIFY offers several features that distinguish it from traditional neuromodulators:
Long-lasting results: In clinical studies, more than half of patients maintained none or mild frown lines for approximately 6 months. Individual results vary.
Fast onset: Results may begin as early as the next day and typically become noticeable within about 2 days.
Fewer treatments: Its longer duration may allow some patients to maintain their results with fewer treatment visits throughout the year.
Peptide-powered technology: DAXXIFY uses a proprietary peptide as part of its formulation rather than human serum albumin.
Natural-looking smoothing: Treatment is designed to soften dynamic frown lines while maintaining an individualized appearance.
How Long Does DAXXIFY® Last?
DAXXIFY is designed for patients interested in a longer-lasting neuromodulator. In its pivotal clinical trials, more than 50% of patients continued to have none or mild frown lines at 24 weeks—approximately 6 months. The median time for wrinkles to return to their original severity was approximately 26–28 weeks. Results and duration vary from patient to patient.
What is the difference?
Botox® is one of the most recognized neuromodulators and has been used cosmetically for many years. It temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles to soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and expression lines. Results typically last approximately 3–4 months, although duration varies from patient to patient.
Xeomin® also contains botulinum toxin type A, but it is manufactured without the accessory proteins found in some other botulinum toxin products. For this reason, Xeomin is sometimes referred to as a “naked” or highly purified neurotoxin. Its formulation may be an option to consider when discussing concerns about the development of neutralizing antibodies with repeated botulinum toxin exposure. However, clinically significant treatment resistance is uncommon, and no product can guarantee prevention of antibody formation.
DAXXIFY® is a newer, long-lasting botulinum toxin type A treatment. Unlike Botox and Xeomin, DAXXIFY uses a proprietary peptide-based stabilizing technology and does not contain human serum albumin.
One of DAXXIFY's biggest advantages is its duration. In clinical studies for moderate-to-severe frown lines, approximately half of patients maintained none-or-mild frown lines for about 24 weeks (6 months). Some patients experienced results for longer periods.
For patients accustomed to treatments lasting approximately 3–4 months, DAXXIFY may provide substantially longer-lasting wrinkle reduction and potentially fewer treatment visits throughout the year.
How do they work?
DAXXIFY®, Botox® and Xeomin® are injectable botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators. They work by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that tells targeted facial muscles to contract. When muscle activity is reduced, the overlying skin relaxes and dynamic lines caused by repeated facial expressions—such as frowning, squinting or raising the eyebrows—become smoother and less noticeable.
Although all three work through the same basic mechanism, their formulations are different. Botox® contains onabotulinumtoxinA, Xeomin® contains incobotulinumtoxinA and is manufactured without unnecessary complexing proteins, while DAXXIFY® contains daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm and uses a unique peptide-based formulation designed to enhance attachment of the active ingredient to the nerve.
The effects are temporary. Over time, communication between the nerves and muscles gradually returns and muscle movement increases, allowing lines to slowly reappear. Repeat treatments can be performed when appropriate to help maintain your desired results.
Your healthcare provider can help determine whether DAXXIFY®, Botox® or Xeomin® is best suited to your facial anatomy, treatment goals and desired duration of results.
How Is a Botox/Xeomin/DAXXIFY® Procedure Done?
Treatment with DAXXIFY®, Botox® or Xeomin® is a quick, minimally invasive procedure performed in our office. Before treatment, your healthcare provider will evaluate your facial anatomy, muscle movement, areas of concern and desired results to develop an individualized treatment plan.
Using a very fine needle, small amounts of the selected neuromodulator are carefully injected into specific facial muscles. These medications temporarily reduce targeted muscle activity that contributes to dynamic lines and wrinkles, helping create a smoother, more refreshed appearance.
The injections themselves generally take only a few minutes, and there is typically minimal downtime. The average treated time is approximately 10–15 minutes.
Your provider will determine whether DAXXIFY®, Botox® or Xeomin® is most appropriate based on your facial anatomy, treatment goals, previous experience with neuromodulators and desired duration of results.
Individual results may vary. Each product has its own formulation and dosing, and the units of one botulinum toxin product are not interchangeable with those of another.
Which One Is Best for You?
Botox®, Xeomin®, and DAXXIFY® are all botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators, but each have their own distinct FDA-approved biologic products with different formulations, manufacturing processes, potency units and dosing; their units are not interchangeable.
There isn't one product that is best for every patient. Your facial anatomy, treatment goals, previous experience with neuromodulators, desired duration, and individual response should all be considered.
Talk with our healthcare provider about which option is best suited to you.
How Long Does a Botox/Xeomin/DAXXFY Injection Last?
The duration of a neuromodulator treatment varies depending on the product, treatment area, dose, muscle activity, and individual response.
Botox®: Results generally last approximately 3–4 months, although individual results vary.
Xeomin®: Results commonly last approximately 3–4 months, with duration varying between patients.
DAXXIFY®: DAXXIFY is designed to provide longer-lasting results. In clinical studies of frown lines, approximately half of patients maintained none or mild frown lines for about 6 months, and some patients experienced results lasting longer.
Because every patient responds differently, your healthcare provider can help determine which neuromodulator best fits your treatment goals and how frequently you may need treatment.
What Are the Side Effects of Botox/Xeomin/DAXXIFY?
Botox®, DAXXIFY® and Xeomin® are generally well tolerated when administered by a qualified healthcare professional. Because all three temporarily reduce muscle activity, they share many potential side effects. Side effects can vary depending on the product, treatment area, dose and individual patient.
Botox® Cosmetic
Possible side effects include:
- Pain, tenderness, redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site
- Headache
- Temporary eyelid or eyebrow drooping
- Temporary facial weakness or asymmetry
- Eyelid swelling or dry eyes
- Dry mouth
- Tiredness
- Neck pain
- Blurred or double vision
In clinical studies, the most common adverse reactions varied by treatment area. For example, eyelid drooping occurred in 3% of patients treated for frown lines, while headache occurred in 9% and brow drooping in 2% of patients treated for forehead lines together with frown lines.
DAXXIFY®
Possible side effects include:
- Headache
- Temporary eyelid drooping
- Temporary facial weakness or asymmetry
- Injection-site pain, redness, swelling or bruising

- Injection-site bruising, discomfort or pain
- Headache
- Temporary eyelid or eyebrow drooping
- Temporary facial weakness
- Eyelid swelling
- Temporary weakness of nearby muscles
For FDA-approved upper facial-line treatment, injection-site bruising (2%) was the most commonly reported adverse reaction occurring at ≥1% and more frequently than placebo. In glabellar-line studies specifically, headache occurred in 5% of Xeomin-treated patients.
Who Should Not Receive Botox/DAXXIFY/Xeomin?
Botox®, DAXXIFY® and Xeomin® may not be appropriate for everyone. You should not receive treatment if you have an infection at the planned injection site or have had a serious allergic reaction to a botulinum toxin product or any ingredient in the selected product.
Before treatment, be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you:
- Have a condition affecting your nerves or muscles, such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or ALS.
- Have a history of difficulty swallowing or breathing.
- Have experienced side effects or an allergic reaction from a previous botulinum toxin treatment.
- Have significant heart or bleeding problems.
Take muscle relaxants, certain antibiotics or other medications that may affect nerve-to-muscle communication.
Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
Have had facial surgery, facial weakness, drooping eyelids or other conditions that could affect treatment.
Your healthcare provider will review your medical history, medications and treatment goals before your procedure to determine whether Botox®, DAXXIFY® or Xeomin® is appropriate and safe for you.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR ALL THREE
Although uncommon, all botulinum toxin products carry an FDA Boxed Warning for distant spread of toxin effect. The effects of botulinum toxin can potentially spread beyond the injection area and cause symptoms such as generalized muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, double or blurred vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms may occur hours to weeks following treatment.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing following treatment.
DAXXIFY® vs. Botox® and Xeomin®
All three are botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators, but they have different formulations and their units are not interchangeable.
Botox® is a well-established neuromodulator commonly used to temporarily soften expression lines.
Xeomin® contains botulinum toxin type A without the accessory proteins found in some other formulations.
DAXXIFY® uses a unique peptide-based formulation and was developed to provide a longer duration of effect, making it particularly attractive to patients who would prefer fewer treatments throughout the year.
Not sure which is right for you? Our healthcare provider can evaluate your facial anatomy, treatment goals, previous neuromodulator experience, and desired duration to help determine the most appropriate option.
